Psychological safety: what a leader can actually change

Where precision is prized, admitting a mistake is socially costly. That is exactly where psychological safety matters.
The research
Amy Edmondson (1999, Administrative Science Quarterly) studies 51 teams in a manufacturing firm: psychological safety is associated with learning behaviour, itself linked to team performance.
The limit
One organisation, cross-sectional data: causal direction cannot be firmly established. (our executive and employee training programmes)

Practical check in Zurich
For a month, open each team meeting with 'what didn't work this week?', the leader going first. Count issues raised before they become incidents. To go further: explore the Executive Leadership training in Zurich, or browse our executive and employee training programmes in Switzerland.
