A relaxed committee, smiles and cordial exchanges make speaking more pleasant, but their meaning remains uncertain. The management question is specific: how can we check whether a recommendation benefits from its arguments rather than from the atmosphere in which it is presented?

What the literature establishes

Richard E. Petty, David W. Schumann, Steven A. Richman and Alan J. Strathman (1993, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology) demonstrate experimentally that positive mood can influence persuasion through different routes depending on how closely a message is examined. When scrutiny is limited, affect can contribute to attitudes without a corresponding change in message-related thoughts; when scrutiny is extensive, it can influence the tone of those thoughts. A favourable reception therefore does not, by itself, reveal how the arguments were processed.

When feelings become information

Norbert Schwarz and Gerald L. Clore (1983, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology) show that people can use their affective state as information when assessing their life satisfaction. Their experiments also indicate that attributing this state to an external source can alter its influence on judgement. This research does not address professional presentations, but it illuminates a relevant mechanism: a feeling can be used as information about something that did not necessarily produce it.

The premature conclusion

One might conclude that effective public speaking should begin by putting the audience in a good mood. These studies justify neither that formula nor its opposite: they show that affect can enter into judgement, not that it improves decision quality. For a manager, creating a cordial climate and subjecting a recommendation to rigorous scrutiny are distinct objectives that can be pursued together. (our executive and employee training programmes)

What the evidence cannot promise

These experiments do not provide direct validation in multilingual committees in Genève operating under professional obligations. A laboratory-induced mood is not equivalent to a collective atmosphere, which also involves hierarchy, trust and participants' interests. Smiles, compliments or reported satisfaction after a presentation cannot isolate these influences.

A practical check in Genève

Within SHR's “Public Speaking & impact” programme, one possible exercise uses a fictional case adapted to private banking, international organisations, luxury watchmaking or commodity trading in Genève. Before the group discussion, each listener separately rates how pleasant the presentation was and how sound the recommendation is, then identifies one piece of case evidence supporting it and one that might warrant revising it. The main measure is the proportion of responses containing both relevant elements, checked against a rubric prepared from the case. A pleasant reception accompanied by a low proportion of substantiated responses identifies an area for improvement; it does not establish a causal effect of the atmosphere.
